I read Bonfire of the Vanities years ago. I enjoyed that book, but I didn't find the characters very likable.
I find myself in the same situation with A Man in Full. I enjoy the writing--although it is a cheap substitute for Atonement--but I don't find the characters or their situations particularly likable. And if I start to like a character, he (because aren't they mostly men???) displays some tragic flaw and irritates me.
Not that I have a problem with tragic flaws--they can be redeemed. But the whole excess of it all--Charlie Croker is just a carictature of a real person. Or so it seems.
I probably will not make it to the discussion this month, but I might have something more to say later.
Ok,it's me again & I just reached the part where Conrad is trying desperately to deal with his car. I can't read anymore. I just can't.
The spiralling of the bad things is just too out of control. It's so over the top it's difficult to believe. Yes, I know it's fiction, but it's not good fiction.
Blah.
I listened to the book on recorded book. Maybe it was easier to listen to than to actually read. As outrageous as the characters and situations were somehow I still enjoyed it. Again, maybe it was just the readers voice that sucked me in. Marie, things get much worse for Conrad before they get better. Oh well. Guess my first book club selection was a bust. Better luck if there is a next time.
